Molecular Neurogenetics Research Unit

Molecular Neurobiology activities

Project Description

The goal of this Unit is to establish a shared facility to assist investigators associated with the Institute of Neurobiology in the application of molecular biology techniques in studies of the regulation of gene expression in neurobiological systems. The Unit provides advisory, technical and instrumentation support to faculty, postdoctoral associates, students and laboratory technicians. A scientific director and an overseeing committee evaluate projects that request support of the unit and determine suitability and the best means of implementation and offering of services.

The Unit is located in the south-side basement of the Institute of Neurobiology building (201 Calle Norzagaray in Old San Juan) and occupies an area of approximately 1,300 square feet distributed in two research laboratories and a separate PCR/RNA room. In addition to the shared instrumentation available, the Unit provides limited materials and supplies, as well as bench and storage space for approved projects.

Major Instrumentation
  • Nucleo Vision Imager with quantitation analysis software
  • Thermal cyclers
  • Agarose and polyacrylamide gel and blotting systems
  • Ultra low temperature freezer
  • Microwave oven heat blocks

Services Provided
  • Consultation in application of molecular biology to neuroscience research
  • Specialized seminars in molecular neurobiology
  • Training of faculty, students and technical personnel on the use of the instrumentation available at the facility
