Central Electron Microscopy Unit

Description of Facilities
The Central Electron Microscope Unit (CEMU) is a shared advanced instrumentation laboratory of the Medical Sciences Campus. Developed under the aegis of the RCMI Program, this Unit maintains and operates electron microscope facilities for the faculty, investigators and students of the Medical Sciences Campus for research, training and diagnosis.
The Unit, located in the basement of the main Medical Sciences Campus building, occupies an area of approximately 2,000 square feet and consistsof two specimen preparation laboratories, four electron microscope suites, a fully equipped darkroom, a microtomy room, and two offices. One of the processing laboratories contains all the ancillary instruments and equipment required to process samples for transmission electron microscopy, the other for scanning electron microscopy. The microtomy laboratory contains six cubicles, each of which houses an ultramicrotome; some of the cubicles are also equipped with a compound microscope for examination of thick sections. A Nikon compound microscope with camera attachment is available for microphotography, and a Bowens Illumitrans copier for preparation and duplication of slides.
