Montaner, Professor of the Immunology Program at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, PA and Director of the RCMI Mentoring Program at the Medical Sciences Campus (MSC), was the guest speaker.
Transmission of Live High-Definition Video of Endoscopy Over Internet2
On October 8, 2009, the RCMI Center for Information Architecture in Research (CIAR) transmitted a live, high-definition video stream of an endoscopy from the University District Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to the Internet2 Fall Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
Congratulations to Dr. Walmor De Mello on the publication of his new book "Renin Angiotensin System and Cardiovascular Disease"
The RCMI Program congratulates Dr. Walmor De Mello in the publication of his book "Renin Angiotensin System and Cardiovascular Disease". In the book, Editors, Dr. Walmor C. DeMello and Dr. Edward Frohlich, both established specialists in the renin angiotensin aldosterone system and the pathobiology of hypertension, present the most relevant aspects of the role of this system on cardiovascular diseases including hypertension, congestive heart failure, atherosclerosis and diabetes.
Visit of Dr. Sidney McNairy to the University of Puerto Rico
Dr. Sidney McNairy, Director of the Division of Research Resources at NCRR-NIH visited the University of Puerto Rico on December 9-11th, 2009. He was accompanied by Mr. Esmail Torkashvan, P.E. General Engineer NCRR/NIH and Dr. Farhad Memarzadeh – Director, Division of Technical Resources NIH/ORF. During his visit the group met with the Dr. Miguel Rivera, Acting President of the University of Puerto Rico; Dr. Héctor Santiago, Acting VP for Research and Technology; Dr. Ana Guadalupe, Acting Chancellor of the Rio Piedras Campus and Dr. Rafael Rodríguez, Acting Chancellor of the Medical Sciences Campus, as well as with members of the Board of Trustees, researchers and construction managers to discuss general progress of the construction of the UPR Molecular Sciences Building.
Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet has been Elected President of the Puerto Rico Health Care Council
Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, Director of the RCMI Program and Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus has been elected President of the Puerto Rico Health Care Council. Dr. Fernández-Repollet succeeded Dr. Amarilys Silva, Eli Lilly, who served as President from 2007-2009.

Universia: Fifth Metting Of University Presidents And Chancellors
Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, RCMI Program Director at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, was invited to participate in the Fifth Meeting of University Presidents and Chancellors sponsored by UNIVERSIA, the largest Ibero-American network of university collaborations, which took place at the Ritz Carlton on October 22, 2009.
Puerto Rican Minds in Action Sponsors Special Conference
The youth organization Puerto Rican Minds in Action (“Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción”, in Spanish) held a special conference on October 10, 2009 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The conference, entitled Social Commitment from Theory to Practice (“Compromiso Social de la Teoría a la Práctica”, in Spanish) focused on the economic and social challenges that Puerto Rico faces and the contribution of the Puerto Rican youth through the development of a bank of ideas and community-based initiatives to the economic and social advancement of the Island.
Annual Meeting of RCMI Principal Investigators and Program Directors
RCMI Program Principal Investigators and Directors participated in a meeting with Dr. Barbara Alving, NCRR Director and NCRR Staff. The activities were organized by Jackson State University and were held on September 14-15, 2009 in Bethesda, MD.
The University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus One of Nine Institutions to Create a National Research Resource Discovery (NRRD) Network
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) today announced an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant of $15 million from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) to a nine-member consortium from across the country to create a National Research Resource Discovery (NRRD) network (http://www.nih.gov/news/health/nov2009/ncrr-02.htm ).

Recent Publication from the RCMI Program
The paper HPLC–MS/MS method for the intracellular determination of ribavirin monophosphate and ribavirin triphosphate in CEMss cells was recently published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis by a team that includes Dr. José F. Rodríguez-Orengo, Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine.
AUTM Eastern Region Meeting
The AUTM 2009 Eastern Region Meeting “Going Global: Innovation without Borders” was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico on June 15-17, 2009. Puerto Rico was identified as a location that facilitates the interaction among North American and non-North American members and fosters the exchange of information on different technology transfer approaches.
2009 BIO International Convention
