MSC's National Center for Excellence in Women's Health Recognizes Support of the RCMI Program

The role of the RCMI Program in the Development of the Medical Sciences Campus' National Center of Excellence in Women's Health was acknowledge by institutional officials during the celebration of the Center's anniversary.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (DHHS) Office on Women's Health named the Medical Sciences Campus' Women's Health Center (Centro Mujer y Salud) one of the National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health last October 1998.

The National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health began in 1996 with the objective of establishing and evaluating a new model health care system. The new system aims to join women's health research, medical training, clinical care, public health education, community outreach, and the promotion of women in academic medicine around the common mission of improving the health of women from diverse backgrounds and in all stages of life.

Upon receiving this honor, the University of Puerto Rico joins 19 other institutions, including Harvard University, Yale University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), and Boston University at the forefront of women's health.

The MSC's Women's Health Center is directed by Delia M. Camacho, Ph.D. and Co-Directed by Ana Moscoso, MLS, MPH. It includes a Research Unit directed by Emma Fernández-Repollet, Ph.D., also Director of the RCMI Basic Research Program. The Research Unit seeks to establish research priorities in basic and clinical research as well as to develop a research agenda for the health of Puerto Rican women.

The Center's inauguration as a National Center of Excellence in Women's Health will be celebrated on March 18, 1999, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 Noon, at the 6th Floor Amphitheater.
