Medical Sciences Campus Celebrates 20th Research and Education Forum

The Medical Sciences Campus celebrated its 20th Research and Education Forum from April 28 to April 30. The Forum has become the major annual activity at the Campus for sharing findings from projects in research and education. This year the forum was titled Research and Education as Tools for Improving Health in the Next Millenium , and was dedicated to Dr. José del Castillo .

Keynote speakers included Dr. Carmen Feliciano, Commonwealth's Secretary of Health; Dr. James F. Battey and Dr. Carter van Waes, Director and Acting Clinical Director respectively of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, NIH; Dr. Ricardo Martínez, Director for Extramural Research of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, NIH, and Dr. Peter John Polverini from the Department of Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. The Annual Bailey K. Ashford Memorial Lecture was given by Dr. Duane Gubler, Director of the Division of Vector-Born Diseases, National Center for Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Faculty and students participated as authors or coauthors of 49 poster presentations and 66 oral presentations.

The 1999 Forum was organized by Drs. José Hawayek, Dean of Academic Affairs; Dr. Antonio Silva-Iglesia, Special Assistant to the Dean of Academic Affairs; Mr. Carmelo Cruz and Ms. Myrna Cabán from the Deanship of Academic Affairs; Dr. Dipak Banerjee, Dr. Julio Colón and Ms. Lizette García from the School of Medicine; Dr. Nicolás Linares from the College of Health-Related Professions; Dr. Aurora Vassos and Dr. María Rosa from the School of Nursing; Dr. Ricardo Guerrero from the School of Pharmacy, and Dr. Augusto Elías from the School of Dentistry. Congratulations to the Forum's Steering Commitee for organizing a very productive edition for this year.
