CDC's Dr. Robert Vogt Presents Seminar
Dr. Robert Vogt, of the CDC, visited the Medical Sciences Campus to present a seminar titled Diabetes Prevention Research: Public Health Practice in the Next Millenium as part of the 1998-1999 RCMI Special Seminar Series. The seminar was co-sponsored by the RCMI Basic Research Program and the RCMI Clinical Research Center.
Dr. Richard A. Spritz Visits the Medical Sciences Campus
Dr. Richard A. Spritz, Director of the Human Medical Genetics Program and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, visited the Medical Campus in May.
Puerto Rico Site of 6th Annual RCMI AIDS Symposium
The 6th Annual AIDS Symposium was celebrated November 15-18, 1998 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Isla Verde. This was the third time since its inception that Puerto Rico served as the site for this forum for the dissemination and exchange of scientific information regarding AIDS.

RCMI Program Hosts ResDAC Courses at the Medical Sciences Campus
Staff from the Research Data Assistance Center presented two workshops on the use of Medicare data for research at the Medical Sciences Campus from February 17 to February 26 hosted by the RCMI Research Informatics Unit.

The RCMI Program Evaluation team visited the Medical Sciences Campus on February 23 and 24 as part of NCRR's evaluation of the RCMI Program at the national level.
Medical Students Present Posters as Part of Neurosciences Course
As part of their Neurosciences course, the first year medical students prepared poster presentations on some aspects of neuroscience, either clinical or basic science, which they wanted to explore more thoroughly. Thirteen posters were developed by groups of 3 to 10 students, including one by two graduate students
Dr. Wieslaw Kozek Wins MSA Council Award
Dr. Wieslaw Kozek won first place with his poster Applications of Soft X-Ray and Other Microscopy Techniques to Elucidate the Structure of Parasitic Metazoa at the MSA Council's annual meeting last July (1998).
SUNY Syracuse Professor, Dr. José Jalife, Conducts Seminar at MSC
On March 5, 1999 the RCMI Program co-sponsored with the Department of Pharmacology the seminar Electrophysiologic Phenotypes in Mouse models of Connexin Null Mutation" The seminar was presented by Dr. José Jalife, Professor and Chairman of Pharmacology and Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the Health Science Center at the State University of New York, Syracuse Campus.
RCMI Program Highlighted in UPR Publication
The University of Puerto Rico's Office of Federal and External Affairs published a special report, UPR Initiatives: A Year In Review, last January 1999. The yearly report, which covered numerous projects and events throughout 1998, highlighted the RCMI Program in several articles.
Annual RCMI Molecular Biology Workshop, March 24-25, 1999
The annual RCMI Molecular Biology Workshop was held on March 24 and 25, 1999 at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus (UPR-MSC). This year the workshop was titled Learning How to Use the GCG Wisconsin Package, and it was sponsored by the Medical Sciences Campus RCMI Program, with partial support from the Dean of Academic Affairs, and the Department of Biochemistry of the UPR School of Medicine.
External Advisory Committee Visits RCMI Program
Members of the RCMI Program's External Advisory Committee visited the Medical Sciences Campus last February. Drs. Heinz Valtin, Ann Le Furgey and Peter Ingram conducted their annual evaluation of the program and its activities.
RCMI Program Directors Meeting and Scientific Conference in Los Angeles, California
The 1999 Annual NIH-RCMI Program Directors Meeting and Scientific Conference was held on March 28-31 in Los Angeles, California. The activity was hosted by Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.
Drs. Ann Le Furgey and Peter Ingram Participate in Seminar Series
Dr. Ann Le Furgey and Dr. Peter Ingram, both of Duke University in North Carolina, presented the seminar, Analytical Microscopy: Basic and Clinical Applications, as part of the 1998-1999 RCMI Special Seminar Series last February 10th.
RCMI Central Electron Microscopy Unit Hosts Open House
The RCMI Central Electron Microscopy Unit (CEMU) hosted an open House on February 9, 1999 at its facilities in the Main Building of the Medical Sciences Campus, co-sponsored by the RCMI Program, the Image Analysis Resource Center, and the Research Informatics Unit.

Medical Sciences Campus Honors Dr. José del Castillo
Faculty and graduate students of the Medical Sciences Campus met on April 29 to recognize the work, achievements and contributions of Dr. José del Castillo, Distinguished Professor and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pharmacology.
