External Advisory Committee Visits RCMI Program

Members of the RCMI Program's External Advisory Committee visited the Medical Sciences Campus last February. Drs .Heinz Valtin, Ann Le Furgey and Peter Ingram conducted their annual evaluation of the program and its activities.

The visit began on Thursday, February 11, 1999. The committee members met throughout the day with Dr. Norman Maldonado, President of the University of Puerto Rico, Dr. Pedro Santiago-Borrero, Acting Chancellor of the Medical Sciences Campus, the Director and Associate Director of the RCMI Program, and the Activity Coordinators of the current grant cycle. The updates were followed by visits to the various RCMI supported facilities at the MSC.

On Friday, February 12, 1999, the External Advisory Committee members met with various key members of the Medical Sciences Campus Administration. These key members included Dr. José Hawayek, Dean of Academic Affairs; Dr. Angel Román Franco, Dean of Medicine; Mr. Norberto Pérez, Dean of Administration; Dr. Julio Benabe, Director of the RCMI Clinical Research Center; Dr. Jean Turnquist, Director of the MBRS Program; Dr. Eddie González, MSC Compliance Officer; Dr. Delia Camacho, Director of the Women's Health Center; Ms. Sandra Santos, Director of the Information System's Office; and Dr. George Hillyer, former Associate Dean of Biomedical Sciences at the School of Medicine, now Chancellor of the Río Piedras Campus.

Prior to concluding their visit, the External Advisory Committee members also participated in a meeting with the RCMI Program's Internal Advisory Committee. The Committee will provide a written report of the visit to Dr. Pedro Santiago-Borrero, Acting Chancellor of the Medical Sciences Campus and Principal Investigator of the RCMI Program.
