RCMI Program Directors Meeting and Scientific Conference in Los Angeles, California.

The 1999 Annual NIH-RCMI Program Directors Meeting and Scientific Conference was held on March 28-31 in Los Angeles, California. The activity was hosted by Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. Dr. Richard Baker, RCMI Biomedical Program Director; Dr. Keith C. Norris, RCMI Clinical Program Director, and Mr. Wiley Brown, RCMI Program Administrator, were the main organizers and deserve a special recognition for an outstanding conference program, which focused on ethnicity and aging in the 21st century.

Plenary sessions addressed topics such as ethinicity and cancer; age- related research in the 21st century; diabetes; cellular growth and apoptosis; public health and policy; aging and the brain, as well as telemedicine. The conference program also included a Distinguished Lecture Series presented by three Nobel Laureates: Kary B. Mullis, Ph.D., 1993 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry; Walter Kohn, Ph.D. 1998 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, and Stanley B. Prusiner, M.D. 1997 Nobel Laureate in Medicine and Physiology. Among the various RCMI investigators who presented their studies were Dr. Jerry Guyden and Dr. William Boto from City College of New York; Dr. Karam F.A. Soliman from Florida AM University; Dr. Charles W. Flowers, Dr. Mayer Davidson, Dr. Shalender Bhasin, and Dr. Edmond H. Pi from Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.

Dr. Sidney McNairy, Director of Research Infrastructure, NCRR-NIH introduced the activity and provided a comprehensive overview of the RCMI Program, as well as of the Clinical Research Infrastructure Initiative and the RIMI Program.
