RCMI Central Electron Microscopy Unit Hosts Open House

The RCMI Central Electron Microscopy Unit (CEMU) hosted an open house on February 9, 1999 at its facilities in the Main Building of the Medical Sciences Campus, co-sponsored by the RCMI Program, the Image Analysis Resource Center, and the Research Informatics Unit. Guests of honor at the event were Dr. Ann Le Furgey, Director of the Analytical Electron Microscopy Laboratory at Duke University, and Dr. Peter Ingram, Senior Physicist at the Research Triangle Institute in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Le Furgey and Duke University, the CEMU received and installed a JEOL 1200 microscope, a state-of-the-art instrument that can be used to conduct both transmission and scanning electron microscopy studies. The instrument is also equipped with an x-ray fluorescence detector, which allows the determination of the elemental composition of intracellular structures. All images are captured digitally, and thus, can be transferred electronically for further processing and analysis. Dr. Le Furgey and Dr. Ingram were both presented with plaques by the RCMI Program in appreciation of this donation and of their continuous support.

The event was open to the public and provided the opportunity to see the new JEOL 1200 microscope in operation. It was attended by the Dr. Pedro Santiago-Borrero, Acting Chancellor of the Medical Sciences Campus and Principal Investigator of the RCMI Program; Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, Director of the RCMI Program; Dr. José G. Conde, Associate Director of the RCMI Program; Dr. Wieslaw Kozek, Director of the CEMU, and numerous investigators and graduate students from the Medical Sciences Campus.
