Dr. José del Castillo

Faculty and graduate students of the Medical Sciences Campus met on April 29 to recognize the work, achievements and contributions of Dr. José del Castillo, Distinguished Professor and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pharmacology. Dr. del Castillo was born in Salamanca, Spain. After receiving his training in medicine and physiology in Europe, he occupied teaching and research positions in Europe and in the United States. In 1957, he was appointed Director of the Clinical Neurobiology Section of the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. del Castillo joined the faculty of the School of Medicine in 1959. In 1961 he won a Research Career Award from the National Institutes of Health which has been renewed succesfully to this day. Dr. del Castillo is the founder of the Neurobiology Institute located in Old San Juan. Under his guidance, the institute became a major contributor to the development of research in the neurosciences, as well as a key resource for the training and mentoring of gradute students.

Dr. del Castillo's major contributions to neuroscience research is documented in over 150 publications, and have been recognized by many international and local awards and distinctions. His dedication to teaching and mentoring of graduate students has been responsible for the successful careers of many Puerto Rican scientists, and his influence as investigator, professor and scholar has spread well beyond our island.

We are honored to have among us Dr. José del Castillo, a true scholar and a fine gentleman.
