A Tribute to Julio V. Santiago

For me, one of the great joys and benefits of serving on the External Advisory Committee was to have met Julio Santiago. I shall always remember how he referred to me -- not sarcastically, but certainly jocularly -- as "our leader", accompanied invariably with a smile, often with a wink, and certainly always with a twinkle in his eye. "Deferred to me" might be the more accurate phrase, but Julio was really too active, too bursting with his own ideas, to defer for long to anyone.

FUNDS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS DEVELOPMENT IN RESEARCH

One of the activities under the RCMI Program is to provide funds for graduate students development in research. This year, a total of $4,000 is available to enable graduate students to learn new research techniques and/or develop collaborative relationships with senior scientists outside of Puerto Rico. Funds may be used for travel and housing , as well as other related expenses.

ResDAC Investigators Visit the Medical Sciences Campus RCMI Program

Investigators from the Research Data Assistance Center (ResDAC) visited the RCMI Program during January 15 and 16 to explore potential areas of research using computer databases. They met with faculty from the Schools of Medicine and Public Health to discuss research interests as well as opportunities for research using files from the the Health Care Financing Admnistration.

The RCMI Program has installed its own web server at the Medical Sciences Campus. The Linux-based server is a 233 MHz tower connected to a Bay Networks 28104 concentrator also acquired through RCMI funds.

External Advisory Committee Visits RCMI Program for Annual Evaluation

Members of the Medical Sciences Campus RCMI External Advisory Committee met with RCMI staff, investigators, and Campus' officials during their visit on February 2 - 4, 1998. The purpose of their annual visit to the campus is to assess progress towards RCMI program goals, as well as to identify potential areas of development and obstacles to the enhancement of the campus research environment.

The Medical Sciences Campus RCMI Clinical Research Center opened its doors on October 14, 1997. The inauguration was attended by various government and institutional representatives including Dr. Norman Maldonado, President of the University of Puerto Rico; Dr. Adolfo Firpo, Chancellor of the Medical Sciences Campus; Dr. Sidney McNairy, Director of Research Infrastructure at the National Institutes of Health; Dr. Carmen Feliciano, Puerto Rico Secretary of Health; and Dr. Angel Cintrón, UPR Trus tee to whom the event was dedicated.
