RCMI Principal Investigators Meeting

The Fall Meeting of Principal Investigators and Program Directors of the RCMI Program was held on September 10, 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Keith Norris, President of the RCMI Program Directors Association presided the meeting. Dr. Barbara Alving, Director of the National Center of Research Resources and Dr. Sidney McNairy Jr., Director of the Division of Research Infrastructure (DRI) welcomed the participants.

An up-date of the RCMI Program was provided by Dr. Sheila McClure, Director of the RCMI Program. In her presentation, Dr. McClure highlighted the importance of the RCMI Translational Research Network (RTRN) for facilitating interdisciplinary clinical and translational research, enhancing the capacity for collaboration, developing state-of-the-art remote data capturing and exchange systems, and supporting training and educational resources for investigators, healthcare providers, research participants and the general public. Dr. McClure introduced new Funding Opportunities Announcements (FOAs) for the Clinical Activities and the CRECD program. These two announcements were presented in detailed by Dr. Maureen Beanan and Dr. Khishan Arora, Program Officers at the Division of Research Infrastructure.

Other presentations included an up-date of the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) by Dr.Anthony Hayward, Director of the Division of Clinical Research Resources; an overview of the Division of Biomedical Technology Research Resources (DBT) by Dr. Doug Sheeley, Program Officer DBT; a synopsis of the relevance of Technology Transfer in translational research by Dr. Bonny Harbinger, Deputy Director, Office of Technology Transfer at the NIH, and Ms. Lilli Portilla, Director of the Office of Technology Transfer at the NHLBI, and an up-date by Dr. Keith Norris about the RCMI Translational Research Network.

Other topics discussed were the Health Disparities Research Plan of NIH, presented by Dr. James Townsend, RCMI Principal Investigator at Meharry Medical College and the XIth RCMI International Symposium to be held on November 30- December 4, 2008 in Hawaii, presented by Dr. Marilyn Dunlap.

The meeting concluded with an Executive Session presided by Dr. Keith Norris.
