Dr. Marco A. Sánchez, Research Assistant Professor from Oregon Health & Sciences University visits University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus
The RCMI AIDS and Emerging Infectious Diseases Program at the UPR-Medical Sciences Campus sponsored the visit of Dr. Marco A. Sánchez, Research Assistant Professor from the Oregon Health & Sciences University on November 15-16, 2005.
Dr. Sánchez presented the workshop entitled Functional expression of parasitic plasma membrane transporters in Xenopus laevis oocytes in which he reviewed the biochemical basis and methodological approaches to perform functional expression studies of membrane transport proteins in Xenopus oocytes, the most extensively employed heterologous expression system. In his seminar Functional studies of Trypanosoma brucei purine transporters Dr. Sánchez discussed the role of purine transporters in the permeation of drugs against T. brucei and other parasites. He underscored the importance of conducting molecular studies on individual transporters based on data gathered from expression studies in Xenopus oocytes which suggest purine transport to be much more complex than originally proposed. Both activities were well attended, with active participation from faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students. The seminar was distributed through the internet by means of videocasting.
