Governor Signs Proclamation of Biotechnology Week
The Secretary of Economic Development and Commerce and Executive Director of PRIDCO, Hon. Jorge P. Silva Puras, delivered the Governor’s Proclamation acknowledging the initiation of the Biotechnology Week which will extend from September 19-23, 2005. The activity was held in support of the initiatives conducted by the Biotechnology Alliance, INDUNIV, as well as the academic and the industrial sectors to promote Puerto Rico's competitiveness based on a knowledge economy. After 40 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry and fermentation processes, Puerto Rico has positioned itself as one of the countries in the world with a greater manufacturing biotechnology operation, stated Secretary Silva Puras. Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, Vice President for Research and Technology represented University of Puerto Rico in the activity.
Other activities planned for the week include an exhibit of the technological equipment used in applying biotechnology in research and product development applications and a BIO-Workshop. The exhibit will be held at the atrium of the Puerto Rico Economic Development Company (PRIDCO), while the BIO-Workshop will take place at the University of Puerto Rico, Botanical Gardens South.
