University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus receives Dr. Blanca P. Ayala, Research Assistant Professor from Oregon Health & Sciences University

The RCMI AIDS and Emerging Infectious Diseases Program at the UPR-Medical Sciences Campus sponsored the visit of Dr. Blanca P. Ayala, Research Assistant Professor from the Oregon Health & Sciences University on November 17-18, 2005.

Dr. Ayala presented the workshop Calcium Signaling where she reviewed the cellular Ca2+ transport pathways, addressed cell signaling pathways influenced by Ca2+ transients, and provided examples of key sites for pharmacological manipulation. On her seminar Neisseria gonorrhoeae pili and porin cooperatively induce Ca2+ transients during infection she discussed her results on Ca2+ transients induced in human epithelial cells during infection with live, piliated N. gonorrhoeae. Dr. Ayala proposed a model whereby cooperation between the pilus and porin results in the triggering of Ca2+ fluxes during the initial stages of pilus-mediated attachment. Both activities were well attended, with active participation from faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students.
