Andrew Waters, PhD, Professor from Leiden University Medical Centre visits University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus
The RCMI AIDS and Emerging Infectious Diseases Program at the UPR-Medical Sciences Campus sponsored on January 26, 2006 the visit of Dr. Andrew Waters, Professor and internationally recognized scientist from Leiden University. Dr. Waters presented the seminar entitled The rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei: a malaria model for all seasons? which focused on the gametocytes, the precursor cells of malaria parasite gametes that circulate in the blood of the vertebrate host and are responsible for the transmission from host to mosquito vector. Dr. Waters discussed proteome coverage for both male and female gametocytes, the analysis of two sex specific kinases, and the existence of sex-specific regulatory pathways. He also reviewed the central role of RNA Binding Proteins (RBP) in gametocytes development, and the therapeutic possibilities of a thorough understanding of gametocyte mRNA homeostasis. The seminar was well attended, with active participation of faculty members and students.
