Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet Appointed Acting Vice-President for Research and Technology of the University of Puerto Rico
Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, Director of the RCMI Program at the Medical Sciences Campus, was appointed Acting Vice-President for Research and Technology of the University of Puerto Rico on August 25, 2003.

The RCMI AIDS and Emerging Infectious Diseases Program at the UPR-Medical Sciences Campus sponsored the visit of Dr. Rick L. Tarleton, Distinguished Research Professor of Cellular Biology and Founding Director of the Center for Tropical & Emerging Global Diseases from the University of Georgia, on March 8-9, 2004.
MBRS-RISE Program Summer 2003
On August 1st, 2003, the MBRS-RISE Program sponsored a research activity at the UPR Medical Sciences Campus where students presented a poster with results of their research experiences during the summer 2003.
Medical Sciences Campus Joins Research Channel
The University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus joined ResearchChannel as a Supporting Participant effective September 1st, 2003. This collaboration is made possible through the RCMI Program.
RCMI Program Principal Investigators and Program Directors Meet in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Principal Investigators and Program Directors of currently funded RCMI Programs in the United States met on November 14 - 15, 2003 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in San Juan Puerto Rico. NIH officials attending the meeting.
Dr. Sidney McNairy Meets, Director of the Division of Research Infrastructure met with NCRR-Supported Directors and Principal Investigators at the University of Puerto Rico
Directors and Principal Investigators whose programs and/or initiatives are supported by the Division of Research Infrastructure (DRI) at NCRR met with Dr. Sidney McNairy on March 31, 2004. The purpose of the meeting was to provide an overview and a status report of current initiatives being supported by the DRI at the University of Puerto Rico.

Special congratulations to Dr. Loyda Meléndez on the publication of the article "Macrophage proteomic fingerprinting predicts HIV-1 associated cognitive impairment" on the June 24th issue of the journal Neurology.
Seminar and Workshop on Genome Sequencing
The RCMI AIDS and Emerging Infectious Diseases Program at the UPR-Medical Sciences Campus sponsored the visit of Dr. Jane M. Carlton, Associate Investigator from the Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) on February 12-13, 2004. Dr. Carlton offered a seminar on the TIGR sequencing project and a workshop on comparative genomics.
Dr. Sidney McNairy, Director Division of Research Infrastructure, Keynote Speaker at the Annual Forum of Research and Education
The program of the XXIV Annual Forum of Research and Education, organized by the Deanship of Academic Affairs, included a plenary session presentation by Dr. Sidney McNairy, Director of the Division of Research Infrastructure at NCRR, NIH. The Forum was held at the UPR Medical Sciences Campus on March 31-April 2, 2004.
Flow Cytometry Annual Workshop 2004
As in previous years, the RCMI Program sponsored the Annual Flow Cytometry Workshop. The workshop was held at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus on August 25-26, 2004.
Flow Cytometry Annual Workshop 2003
The Annual Flow Cytometry Workshop was held on September 3-4, 2003 at the UPR Medical Sciences Campus. The objectives of the seminar is to give an overview in the use of the facility, the basic theory on flow cytometry, the importance of using quality controls and to learn the basic use of the flow cytometer for new users.
Members of the RCMI External Advisory Committee Visit the Medical Sciences Campus
Members of the RCMI External Advisory Committee visited the Medical Sciences Campus on February 17th and 18th, 2004. The group met with the Program Staff, administrative officials and faculty to evaluate the development of information technologies by the RCMI Program, and to discuss issues related to the research environment and research productivity at the Campus.
Center for Information Architecture in Research
The Center for Information Architecture in Research (CIAR) started videoconference hardware and support services at the Medical Sciences Campus. Currently, faculty at the Centers for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) and Specialized Neuroscience Research Program (SNRP) are using these resources on a regular basis.
AHRQ Awards One-Million Dollars Grant to the School of Public Health for the Creation of the Puerto Rico Health Services Research Institute
The Department of Health Services Administration at the U.P.R. Graduate School of Public Health has initiated the establishment of the Puerto Rico Health Services Research Institute. This initiative is funded through a one-million dollars MRISP grant awarded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for the period 2003-2006.
