The Vice Presidency for Academic Affairs of the Ana G. Mendez University System organized a Symposium on Research Integrity. The Symposium was held on November 8, 2002 at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The scientific program included presentations by Aaron Manka and Crystal Blackshear from the Office of Inspector General, National Science Foundation in Washington D.C.; Gregory J. Pryor, M.P.A., from the Office of Acquisition of Management and Policy and Carol Wigglesworth from the Office of Laboratory Welfare (OLAW) at the National Institutes of Health in Washington D.C.; Fredeswinda Rivera from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico; Emma Fernández-Repollet form the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, and Juan Arratia and Adanid Prieto from the Universidad Metropolitana in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Other participants included Roberto Ramírez, Universidad Metropolitana; Eddie González, University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, and Rolando Roque-Malherbe from the Universidad del Turabo, who served as moderators of the scientific sessions.

The presentations covered relevant topics in research integrity such as ethical dilemmas and research misconduct; laws, rules and regulations governing research; conflict of interest; effective Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees; Institutional Review Board in undergraduate institutions; responsibilities of mentors and trainees in research; assessing the value of the undergraduate research experience as well as a humanistic look at integrity and professional ethics.

Congratulations to Dr. José L Torres, Assistant Vice President for Science and Research at the Ana G. Méndez University System and the Organizing Committee for an excellent symposium on the importance of maintaining and ensuring integrity in science, and in biomedical research in particular.
