School of Medicine at the Medical Sciences Campus Gets $18 Million Research Grant
The University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus announced in a press conference that it has received an $18 million endowment fund from the National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities at the National Institutes of Health to establish a Center for Health Research and Clinical Services. The announcement was made on October 29, 2002 in an activity organized by the Office of Press and Communications.

Dr. José R. Carlo, Chancellor of the Medical Sciences Campus informed the audience that the Medical Sciences Campus received $2,925,684 this current year and will receive $5 million per year for the next three years to create and operate the Center. These funds will be placed in high yield investments whose earnings will offset the operational costs of the Center.
Dr. América Facundo addresses the press
The press conference was attended by Antonio García Padilla, President of the University of Puerto Rico, Dr. Francisco Joglar, Dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. América Facundo, Director of the Hispanic Center for Excellence and the person responsible for the submission of the proposal, Dr. Walter Silva, Associate Dean of Biomedical Studies and Dr. Miriam Márquez, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs. The RCMI program was represented by its Director, Dr. Emma Fernández Repollet.
