University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus Participates in the NIAID's HIV Vaccine Trials Network
The University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus is participating in the HVTN network of clinical sites in the United States and abroad that is dedicated to the development of an HIV vaccine. Dr. Carmen Zorrilla, Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and also an RCMI Program investigator made the announcement in a press conference held on December 3, 2002.

Review Article by Dr. Heinz Valtin in the American Journal of Regulatory Physiology Receives Worldwide Attention
In response to an invitation by the editors of the American Journal of Physiology, Dr. Heinz Valtin reviewed the scientific evidence behind the theory that it is necessary for humans to consume eight glasses of water per day in order to remain healthy. Dr. Valtin's findings have been receiving worldwide interest and attention since its completion.

MBRS-RISE Program Summer 2002
The MBRS-RISE Program sponsored the participation of 38 undergraduate and graduate students in the research activities conducted at the UPR Medical Sciences Campus during the Summer 2002. After concluding their research experiences, students were invited to present their results at a Special Poster Presentation, which was held on August 2, 2002 at the Student Center. Thirty posters were presented at the activity, which was attended by faculty members and research staff.
Clinical Reasearch Networking Activity
A networking meeting was organized by the Industry University Research Consortium (INDUNIV) and co-sponsored by the Professional Chemists Association on August 8th at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan.

University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine awarded $2.9 million endowment from the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities
The University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine has been awarded a $2.9 million endowment from the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) at NIH. The endowment will allow the UPR School of Medicine to strengthen and increase the diversity of the biomedical and behavioral research by establishing an "Endowed Health Services Research Center".

The University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus announced in a press conference that it has received an $18 million endowment fund from the National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities at the National Institutes of Health to establish a Center for Health Research and Clinical Services.

Dr. Walmor C. De Mello, Director of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus and Dr. Michiel J. Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, Director of the RCMI Program and Professor in the Department of Pharmacology attended the XIV AIDS International Symposium held in Barcelona, Spain, July 7-12, 2002. She participated as a facilitator of the Workshop: How to select, evaluate and maintain the correct CD4 T-cell counting method for HIV/AIDS treatment.
