Esq. Susan Freya Olive offered first seminar sponsored by the Advancement in Research Activity

On September 10, 2001 Ms. Susan Freya Olive from the firm Olive &Olive, PA located in Durham NC, presented the seminar "Intellectual Property Law" at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus. Ms. Olive is a well-recognized speaker in the field of intellectual property law. She is a frequent lecturer on topics in the field of intellectual property law to bar associations and to general business and trade groups across the nation. She has authored papers in the field of intellectual property law, as well as in the medical-legal interface field.

Ms. Olive presented an outstanding overview of the general characteristics of the four types of intellectual property: patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. The seminar was very well received and it stimulated a lively discussion. She also provided a booklet: "Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights and Trade Secrets: A Primer for Business Executives, Entrepreneurs, and Research Administrators" which was distributed to all attendees.

Attendance to the Seminar

Faculty, graduate students, research administrators and institutional officials attended the seminar. Representatives from the UPR Central Administration included, Mariluz Frontera-Fernandez, Associate Director of the Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Commercialization and her staff, Mr. Victor Rivera, Director Office of Entrepreneurial Support, and Esq. Heath W. Hoglund. Dr. Carlos A. Tollinche, Director of Scientific Affairs, from the INDUNIV Research Consortium was also among the attendees.

Ms. Olive's seminar initiated the Seminar Series of the Advancement in Research Activity which will focus on issues, opportunities, and policies that are essential for the faculty, graduate students, and administrators engaged in the research enterprise.
