First Puerto Rican Conference in Public Health
The School of Public Health of the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus organized the first Puerto Rican Conference in Public Health. The activity was held at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan. Approximately 800 persons from 18 different countries attended the activity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were significantly represented in the Conference.
Dr. J. Paul Robinson, Professor at Purdue University, visits UPR Medical Sciences Campus
Dr. J. Paul Robinson, Professor of Immunopharmacology and Biomedical Engineering and Director of Purdue University Cytometry Laboratories visited the UPR Medical Sciences Campus on April 11-12, 2002. The visit was organized through the Center for Information Architecture in Research, which is coordinated by Dr. José G. Conde, Associate Director of the RCMI Program.
Opportunities in the Private Industry: Seminar by María Rivas, MD, from Eli Lilly Export, S.A.
Dr. María Riva's seminar was part of the special activities sponsored by the RCMI Program Division of Research Services. This activity was organized for graduate students participating in the course: Bioethical and Survival Skills in Research. The course is directed by Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, Director of the RCMI Program.
University of Puerto Rico Announces the Creation of Three World-Class Research Centers in Medical Biotechnology
UPR President Antonio García Padilla announced in a press conference, that the University of Puerto Rico has three new high-tech centers for research and development. The University received $19.8 million in competitive funds from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The RCMI AIDS and Emerging Diseases Program and the RCMI Center for Information Architecture in Research co-hosted two workshops offered by staff from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), National Library of Medicine.
A Short Course: Responsible Conduct of Research offered to the Minority International Research Training (MIRT) Program at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus
A one-day course on "Responsible Conduct of Research" was offered to undergraduate, graduate and medical students participating in the MIRT program, directed by Dr. George Hillyer, Chancellor of the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus and Professor of the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus on February 1, 2002.

On February 14, 2002 Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, Director of the RCMI Program, visited the flow cytometry facilities of the National Laboratory for HIV Immunology in Ottawa, Canada. Francis F. Mandy, Director of the National Laboratory, acompanied Fernández-Repollet during the tour of the facilities.

First BRIN / RCMI Bioinformatics Workshop held at Los Alamos National Laboratories
Institutions (RCMI) Bioinformatics Workshop was held during March 8-9, 2002 in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The workshop was organized by Dr. Susan Kayar and Dr. Shelia McClure, Health Scientist Administrators, Research Infrastructure Division, NCRR, in collaboration with Dr. Kevin Facemyer, University of Nevada Reno, and Dr. Karl Steiner, Delaware Biotechnology Institute, who also served as workshop moderators.

RCMI CIAR hosts visit from the Charles R. Drew University and the University of California, Los Angeles
The Center for Information Architecture in Research, coordinated by Dr. José G. Conde, Associate Director of the RCMI Program, sponsored the visit of Dr. Richard Baker and Dr. Charles W Flowers from Charles R. Drew University, and Dr. Daniel Valentino from the University of California, Los Angeles. The visit included special meetings to discuss strategies that will help develop research collaborations between Charles R. Drew University, UCLA and the UPR Medical Sciences Campus. For this purpose, the group met with Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, Director of the RCMI Program.
