Dr. Flora de Pablo Dávila Seminar

The University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus received the visit of Dr. Alberto Ferrús from the Cajal Institute and Dr. Flora de Pablo Dávila from the Center of Biological Research in Madrid Spain. On September 5, 2001 Dr. Flora de Pablo presented the seminar "Cell-to-cell signaling in nervous system development: The case of (pro)insulin and IGF-I family" at the RCMI Clinical Research Center. Her presentation focused on studies performed, using molecular approaches, to understand the transition between the proliferative and the differentiative stages of the neuroretina and the role of insulin and IGF-1, including protection from apoptosis, in the development of the central nervous system.

On September 6, 2001 Dr. Ferrús presented his seminar entitled " Synapse number and behavior: Does the number matter?" at the Institute of Neurobiology. His presentation provided an overview of his outstanding studies on the Shaker locus of Drosophila using genetic, physiological and biochemical approaches as well as a detailed discussion of his studies on the effect of increasing the number of synapses on the olfactory perception in Drosophila. He also presented data supporting that odor exposure causes central adaptation and morphological changes in olfactory glomeruli in Drosophila.

We thank Dr. Ferrús and Dr. de Pablo Dávila for sharing with us the results of their exciting research.
