Researcher at the Medical Sciences Campus is part of international team to develop application for the monitoring of mosquitoes at a global level

San Juan – Dr. Adelfa Serrano, Professor of the School of Medicine and Director of the RCMI Infectious and Global Diseases Laboratory at the UPR Medical Sciences Campus joined an international team of twenty experts in epidemiology, entomology, public health, citizen science, and science and innovation with the aim of establishing an application for global tracking of mosquitoes. The group met for its first workshop on April 3- 4th 2017 at the United Nations Office, Geneva, Switzerland. The workshop, Harnessing Citizen Science to Tackle Mosquito-Borne Diseases: Towards a Locally Based, yet Global Platform, was organized by the United Nations Environment Program, the Scientific Innovation and Technology Program of the Wilson Center and the European Association of Citizen Science. The hosts called for experts interested in citizen science and monitoring of mosquitoes in North and South America, the South of China and Europe.

"The team agreed to develop a shared, coordinated platform to leverage citizen science for the global surveillance and control of disease-carrying mosquitos, including the species that bear: yellow fever, Chikungunya, dengue, Zika, malaria, and West Nile virus ", explained Dr. Serrano.

This platform will be named Global Mosquito Alert and will feature an open protocol that can be supplemented with modular components that conform to the local and global needs of the researchers. "This will be the first time that a global platform dedicated to citizen science is established to address pertinent public health issues such as mosquito-borne illness." explained Dr. Serrano.
