    e-mail:efernandez@rcm.upr.edu

The University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus has participated in the RCMI Program supporting basic research since 1986. The goal of the Program at the Medical Sciences Campus during the current funding cycle (2001-2006) is to enhance the institution’s biomedical research capabilities, focusing on research efforts addressing health disparities of the Puerto Rican population. Research approaches to address this goal will range from the molecular to the clinical level. The Program will have three components: a Division of Research Resources, which will include all activities that provide research support services in the areas of molecular genetics, information architecture, and image analysis. The Division of Research Development will support research activities addressing health disparities in our population such as AIDS, women’s health (breast cancer, osteoporosis), emerging infectious diseases, and blood disorders. The Division of Advancement in Research will provide opportunities for strengthening research skills, obtaining specialized services on biostatistics, epidemiology and scientific editing, rewarding role models, protecting and commercializing ideas, and accessing research-related databases.

The following persons are current Coordinators of the activities supported by RCMI Program. A description of their individual research interests can be found in the listing for the department in which they hold their academic appointments, while details of their participation in the RCMI Program can be accessed using the link provided below:
