PROTECTION OF HUMAN SUBJECTS

As recently informed in an electronic memorandum prepared by the Office of Contracts, External Funds, and Financial Administration, the NIH will be requiring evidence of education in the protection of human subjects for the key personnel of any proposal which utilizes human beings in its research. This requirement, announced via NIH Notice OD-00-039 on June 5th , 2000, affects any new proposal and non-competing renewal applications effective October 1st , 2000.

The NIH has prepared an online course in the protection of human subjects for its own investigators, and has invited outside researchers to use it as an alternative to fulfill this requirement.
