My research interests are the evaluation of microleakage between dental materials and tooth structure interface, especially when margins are in dentin or cementum; the study of physical properties of dental materials, including adhesive properties to tooth structure, ceramics and metals; and clinical trials of new restorative dental materials. -

My principal areas of research interests are those related to education in the health sciences, as well as community health promotion and delivery of health services. - Díaz-Toro, Elba C., D.M.D. (Assistant Professor)
e-mail:eldiaz@rcm.upr.eduDr. Díaz-Toro is currently directing the Center for the Prevention and Control of Tobacco Use and the Early Detection of Oral Cancer. The Center has clinical and educational services and currently she is developing the research component. She is the Principal Investigator of the “Increasing the Utilization of Puerto Rico Quitline through Outreach” project of the Puerto Rico Cancer Center in collaboration with the University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She is currently participating at the Community Project for the UPR/NYU Oral Cancer RAAHP Center.

My research experience and interests are: Dental Anthropology (physical anthropology), Community Dentistry (prevention of dental diseases, health services evaluation, health service planning and quality evaluation). Also, in the field of epidemiology, I'm very interested in the prevalence of dental diseases. br /> - Juliá de Hernández, Carmen, D.M.D. (Associate Professor) J & J Multidisciplinary Clinic

My research interest is the area of side-effects of dental restorative materials, especially metals. I am conducting clinical research work on the diagnosis and treatment of contact allergic reactions to dental restorative materials, specifically cast metal alloys and their role in the pathogenesis of oral mucosal lesions and the burning mouth syndrome. My interests also include prevalence of sensitivity to metals (palladium and nickel) in the general population and the study of the mechanisms which influence the release of metal ions in the oral cavity such as salivary pH and the oxidation-reduction potential of saliva. - Lebrón, Santos, D.M.D. (Associate Professor) Restorative Sciences Department

My research interest is in the area of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMJ). We are in the process of conducting retrospective prevalence studies utilizing our patients records as our study population. We are also conducting studies of TMJ sonography and TMJ Tomography; comparing the tests results of a control patients group with a group of patients seeking treatment for TMJ Disorders. - López del Valle, Lydia M., D.M.D., M.P.H. (Assistant Professor) Department of Surgical Sciences

Our research has been focused on caries in infants and children and the relationship to microbiological and behavioral risk factors for Puerto Rican children. Several possible etiological factors and new chemotherapeutic approaches are been studied. Our research interests also include saliva, cariology and oral health studies in children, as well as adults. Dr. López is also interested in studies involving statistical design and methodology, as well as epidemiological studies in Dentistry. - Morou-Bermúdez, Evangelia, Ph.D. (Associate Professor)

Two areas of research interests: - Urease Activity and Dental Caries in Children – Pilot Study The specific aims of this study are:
- To determine the association between dental plaque and saliva urease activity and dental caries experience in children.
- To determine and compare the frequency of isolation of selected ureolytic bacterial species in plaque from caries-free versus caries-active children. Ureases are enzymes which metabolize urea to ammonia and for that reason they cause significant increases in the local pH. The generation of ammonia in the dental plaque via the enzymatic breakdown of salivary urea is believed to inhibit dental caries and it may affect the microbial composition of dental plaque. A number of indirect clinical and basic science observations support these hypotheses, however, they have not been addressed directly at the clinical level.
- K23: Urease Activity and Dental Caries in Children The candidate in this revised application for K23 Award has graduate clinical training in Pediatric Dentistry and Ph.D. level research training in Microbiology and I Cariology. The purpose of the requested Award is to provide the Candidate with multidisciplinary training in patient-oriented research, which will help her design and conduct translational studies related to biological predictors of caries risk in children.

Research interests and ongoing projects:
- Glossopyrosis - Data is being obtained from patients suffering from burning sensation in tongue or mouth to correlate these symptoms with other conditions;
- long term evaluation of oral health in volunteers (children) who are followed up with dental examinations and education through television and other mass communication media;
- Pink Teeth - post mortem coloration of teeth has been related to prolonged, severe suffering, agony and lack of oxygen during the agonic state.

My research work is related to the clinical and epidemiological aspects of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders.
Recent studies conducted:
- Correlation between joint sounds and condylar erosions in TMJ symptomatic patients;
- the Effect of Sex and Age on TMJ Symptoms.
Currently I am studying the demographic profile and the oral treatment needs of patients that attend the Dental School Undergraduate Clinic by analyzing the information from a sample of patient records.
