    Dr. Canino is a Professor at the School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, and the Director of the Behavioral Sciences Research Institute, University of Puerto Rico, School of Medicine. She is the principal investigator of several grants funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and by the National Institute of Alcohol. She is presently Principal Investigator of several grants related to pediatric asthma (UO1 HL072519-01), pediatric mental health utilization (UO1 5482701) and health and mental health disparities among Latino and Afro-Caribbean (P20 MD000537). She is co-principal investigator of an application to study Antisocial Behavior among Island and Mainland Puerto Rican Children (RO1 MH 56401-01A1, Dr. Bird is PI), of the Latino Research Program Project (LRPP) (Dr. Alegria is PI) of a study related to the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and health care utilization patterns of US Latinos and Asian Americans (U01 62209, Dr. Alegria, PI) and of a study designed to test the validity of the Spanish translation of the BASIS (R01 MH 58240, Dr. Eisen, PI).

    She has published substantially in the area of instrument psychometrics, particularly as it relates to the adaptation and translation of instruments to the Latino culture. She has been for the past 18 years a leading Latino researcher in the field of psychiatric epidemiology, and psychometrics after having carried out four major psychiatric epidemiologic surveys in the island of Puerto Rico and translated and tested several diagnostic and service utilization measures. She has collaborated with several investigators in the U.S. and abroad in the analyzes of data sets and in the translation and adaptation of instruments.

    The Behavioral Sciences Research Institute’s main objectives are:
  1. To carry out studies of mental disorders, behavioral problems and its associated features in the adult, children and adolescent population of Puerto Rico.
  2. To translate, adapt to the Puerto Rican culture and test the psychometric properties of the various diagnostic instruments used in the research performed.
  3. To develop methodologies and theoretical models which are applicable to research with Hispanic and other minority populations within the United States.
  4. To promote collaborative research with other Research Centers and researchers within and outside of the island, including European Research Center.

    Dr. Canino main research interests is Psychiatric epidemiology, asthma and mental health genetics, psychometrics, asthma epidemiology and management, neuroimaging of psychiatric disorders in children.
